In 2016, Bill’s Boathouse was built mostly from recycled materials by Chris Clarke, Director of creative design and building consultancy SWALE. Later, in September 2021, the business was purchased by Cheryl Ormond, who has since dedicated herself to enhancing the boathouse and its guest experience. She shares: “Bill’s Boathouse is about reconnecting people with nature and offering an experience quite unlike any other. We are beyond delighted when we get our guest’s feedback saying they have had the most magical experience!” Cheryl strives to make Bill’s Boathouse stand out from other accommodation options by adding little touches to be discovered by guests on arrival, including a bottle of wine from the local winery, quality chocolates, and other local produce such as fruits or herbs. The business also offers luxurious extras made by local small businesses in the region such as organic tea blends, local jams, and handmade bath salts. The Boathouse also features high quality linen, and luxurious towels. Furthermore, Bill’s Boathouse is unique for its commitment to providing guests with all the information they need to enjoy an exceptional stay by the Murray River. Upon booking through Airbnb or directly, they can expect to receive an email with details about how to find the location through google maps and access the keys to the house, along with useful information like the closest supermarkets. The email also features a link to the company’s website, where guests can choose to add a gourmet experience to their getaway. For example, they can purchase a gourmet grazing platter and BBQ pack, created by a local provider, which will be there for them upon arrival. For more information about Bill’s Boathouse and the region, guests can refer to the helpful information booklet provided at the property. For a number of years, Bill’s Boathouse has been actively involved with the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) and is rated the area’s best riverfront accommodation. Recently, the company participated in a local SA Travel TV show to promote the Boathouse and the region as a whole, encouraging tourists to visit the area following a flood event. Importantly, Bill’s Boathouse is also certified by Eco Tourism Australia, highlighting its status as a sustainable property. The outcomes of Cheryl’s hard work to improve Bill’s Boathouse are reflected in the feedback it has received from guests in recent years. The company achieved a rating of 4.9 on Airbnb last year, with 97% occupancy. During this time, it received many overwhelmingly positive reviews, with one customer sharing, “Bill’s Boathouse is amazing! A totally unique place to stay and it’s so nice being right on the river. The outdoor bath is also amazing. It was even better than we were expecting.” For its continued excellence, Bill’s Boathouse has been named Most Unique Nature Getaway, South Australia, in the Australian Enterprise Awards 2024. In the years to come, Cheryl plans to continue improving the experience for guests. We are thrilled to congratulate her on the success of Bill’s Boathouse in this awards programme and wish her the best of luck in the years to come.
