Welcome to the Australian Made Awards 2024 Returning for its third instalment, this annual awards programme recognises the remarkable contributions of firms that have excelled in manufacturing, driving economic growth, and setting recognised benchmarks. Targeting a broad spectrum of enterprises, from flourishing start-ups to well-established businesses, the Australian Made Awards 2024 aims to showcase the diversity and enterprising spirit of Australia’s manufacturers. The programme, curated by APAC Insider, is tailored to shine a spotlight on businesses of all sizes that are innovating, evolving, and contributing to the thriving manufacturing landscape. Heading into 2024, Australia’s manufacturing industry is poised for growth with a projected value of US$88 billion! However, a decrease in output, enterprises, and employment is expected. The sector has rebounded post-pandemic, focusing on competitive subindustries like food & beverages and metals, while others have declined. The year 2023 saw a 2.8% growth in output and profits, but a -1.5% drop in employment, reflecting a shift towards high value-added production. This positive environment strengthens the team’s spirits and helps them to uphold the highest quality for those in need of reliable, safe, and entirely innovative products. For example, MASPRO’s largest development of the Bolting Series 2.0 has responded to the mining industry in a way that has completely changed the pace for its customers. Reacting to the need for bolting cylinders that can stand the test of time, MASPRO enhances traditional drilling capabilities as well as delivering innovative features to specifically cater to bolting applications. “One of the major challenges in the mining industry is the early failure of bolting cylinders, which can lead to costly machine downtime. The result was a redesigned, modified bolting
5 cylinder that significantly reduces these common issues, offering a longer equipment lifespan and improved performance at a competitive price. This breakthrough development has transformed the way our customers approach bolting applications, providing them with a more reliable, cost-effective solution,” says Greg Kennard, Managing Director. Driving sustainability initiatives, MASPRO is leading the way for the success of the mining industry. Greg shares, “With increasing emphasis on reducing the environmental impact of mining, there’s been a shift towards developing components that improve energy efficiency and reduce waste. At MASPRO, we are integrating sustainability into our processes by using materials and practices that lower the carbon footprint of our products, aligning with industry trends toward greener operations. “Additionally, MASPRO’s commitment to Australianmade products further supports sustainability efforts by reducing the environmental costs of international shipping, while also adhering to stringent local environmental standards. Our focus on reliability, longevity, and innovation not only helps mining operations run more efficiently but also supports their goals of reducing environmental impact and creating more sustainable operations.” Precision engineering has never been more streamlined than with MASPRO’s contribution to the industry. By joining forces with MASPRO, mining companies are more able to invest in products and solutions that significantly improve the quality of their operations, long-term sustainability goals, and the maintenance of peak performance. Greg comments, “These aspects, combined with our long-standing focus on safety, innovation, and customer satisfaction, truly reflect who we are and why we continue to be a trusted partner in the mining industry.” This award-winning business continues to support its local communities with safe, reliable, and productive mobile mining equipment – proudly made in Australia. APAC Insider- Australian Enterprise Awards 2024 | 8 Biodynamic wine is currently taking the wine industry by storm. As consumers are shifting their focus to more environmentally friendly products, becoming more aware of how their food is grown and made, and where it comes from. The population is becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of conventional farming practices, and the adverse environmental impact of synthetic chemicals. Biodynamic farming avoids using chemicals, instead promoting biodiversity through natural composts, herbal sprays, and other organic practices. We speak with Natalie Wright below, Director of Marri Wood Park, the boutique vineyard championing the biodynamic revolution. Best Boutique Biodynamic Vineyard 2024 & APAC Insider Family-Run Wine Enterprise of the Year 2024 Established in 1992, Marri Wood Park is a boutique, Demeter Bio-Dynamic certified vineyard. Owned and operated by the Wright family, the vineyard is located on Caves Road in Yallingup, just a stone’s throw from Smiths Beach. Marri Wood Park was founded by Julian Wright, the vineyard’s Owner, Manager, and Viticulturist, who is joined by his daughter and company Director, Natalie. Boasting 16 acres and 10,000 vines comprising a variety of grapes, such as cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc, and semillon, grown on a terroir composed of sandy gravelly loam on limestone bedrock. The vineyard does not use irrigation, an approach made possible by the dewy, cooling breeze rolling off the Southern Indian Ocean combined with gentle north facing slopes, undulating topography, and the well-established roots of its established vines of varying ages. “Our biodynamic philosophy utilises sustainable, chemical free practices,” Natalie tells us. “Applying the timing and movement of celestial objects to predicate pruning, live animal fertilising, and picking; complementing our natural and introduced biodiversity as an ecologically beneficial approach to farming.” Marri Wood Park’s advantageous landscape and biodynamic approach to farming has resulted in hardy vines that produce high quality, robust, and delicious grapes. Once ripe, the berries are handpicked and sorted before being fermented in an array of fermenters, including clay amphoras, French, and Austrian oak barrels, to produce the highest quality wine that exemplifies the Margaret River region’s fine viticultural qualities. The distinct, natural properties of Marri Wood Park fruit is largely accredited to Julian Wright’s trust in the cosmos and the natural environment of the vineyard and its surroundings. Natalie tells us that the vineyard has been proudly Demeter BioDynamic certified since 2008 and has learned through biodynamics that the bush is a living entity with abundant diversity and variety, with an ability to communicate and an intelligence seldom acknowledged. “It was Steiner who opened our eyes to these things and Podolinsky, the Founder of Demeter Bio-Dynamics, who taught us to be actively perceptive. By observing and noting the land and its inhabitants, we have developed an affinity with, awareness of, and deep respect for our patch,” she says. “We do not water, feed, plough, plant cover crops, target a specific yield, or balance our soils. We don’t believe chemicals are required to protect our plants. We do believe there is a rhythm to nature and the cosmos that so many of us overlook in modern life.” Julian’s techniques are deeply rooted in the scientific and philosophical teachings of Steiner, the biodynamic pioneering of Podolinsky, and the anthroposophical methods of Waldorf. Since initially planting the vineyard in 1992, he has broken just about every rule of traditional site management. His interference is slight, but timely, choosing to take a hands-off biodynamic approach that requires a massive attention to detail. It is the Wright family’s dedication to the unique approach and reverence for the environment that has earned Marri Wood Park the title of APAC Insider Family-Run Wine Enterprise of the Year 2024 in the Australian Made Awards. These awards are held to highlight the pioneers and trailblazers of the manufacturing industry throughout Australia. Through its biodynamic methodologies, Marri Wood Park has made significant contributions not only to the Australian manufacturing industry, but also the surrounding Australian landscape. “Our wine reflects our home,” Natalie states. “As the custodians of this precious patch of country, we are honoured to grow and make very expressive and honest wines from our vineyard. Australia is synonymous with beautiful landscapes, breathtaking beaches, and warm friendly people. At Marri Wood Park, our unique but completely intentional approach to vineyard management has the health of the environment at the front of our mind.” To keep up with the latest in biodynamic farming and learn more about the vineyard named Best Boutique Biodynamic Vineyard 2024, you can follow Marri Wood Park on Instagram or visit its website today. APAC Insider- Australian Enterprise Awards 2024 | 11 Oct24192 When accommodating for food allergies, it is crucial that customers can 100% trust their food to be safe. Finding factories that do not run the risk of trace elements can be challenging, and while precautionary allergen labels are used to inform consumers, cross-contamination can still occur during the manufacturing, handling, transportation, or storage of foods. Enter Not A Trace, producers of biscuits and cookies that rival mainstream offerings and are entirely free from gluten, nuts, and trace elements. As Not A Trace is named in the Australian Made Awards 2024, we take a closer look at the company. In 1985, the public’s awareness of the growing number of individuals with food allergies, intolerances, and diseases such as diabetes was increasing but there were still insufficient special dietary products in the market and availability was limited to independent health food stores. Entrepreneur Barb O’Brien spotted a monumental opportunity to respond to this emerging health issue with the first, truly dedicated range of free-from foods. That year, the Freedom Foods brand was formed. Freedom Foods quickly became a leader in the health food market, a trusted one-stop shop for gluten free alternatives whose research and innovation resulted in the development of more than 80 products. After the successful sale of Freedom Foods, Barb united with her family in 2009 to build the first large-scale, entirely dedicated nut-free and gluten-free business manufacturing facility in Australia. Driven by taste, quality, and safety, Not A Trace supplies all leading supermarkets with both branded and private label products. With a brand-new 400m², stateof-the-art facility in Melbourne and completely gluten-free and nut-free supply chain, Not A Trace leverages more than three decades of experience in freefrom manufacturing to serve as the market’s trusted partner for contract manufacturing and health food innovation. A 100% Australian family business, Not A Trace is privately owned and operated meaning that customers benefit from dealing firsthand with the business founders and the depth of their expertise. Not A Trace partners with major national retailers, emerging brands, and entrepreneurs, lending its detailed knowledge of nutrition, special dietary requirements, and retail food trends to produce the highest quality food products that are not only scrumptious, but nutritious. To Not A Trace, free-from manufacturing means producing the safest products in the market through entirely gluten-free and nut-free production with no shared lines. Not only does Not A Trace remove the necessary allergens from its products, but the company also places an emphasis on retaining the richness of flavour that its customers deserve. Unfortunately, gluten-free food has had a reputation for its lack of flavour in the past, but as the once-niche food becomes more common in the mainstream market, Not A Trace sees no excuse for poorquality gluten-free offerings. Promising to deliver safety, flavour, and quality, Not A Trace strives to make biscuits and cookies that cater to the whole family. To uphold this commitment to quality, Not A Trace is HACCP and SQF certified, representing the highest quality standards for customers at all levels of the allergy spectrum. The company takes allergens seriously and develops its products with Coeliacs and nut anaphylactics in mind, using real butter and its own blend of gluten free flours to achieve a texture and composition that is safe, rich, and delightful. Using real butter, sugar, and fruits, Not A Trace produces a range of biscuits for indulgence and nutrition, as well as gourmet flavours and the classics. The company’s scope of products includes wire cut classics such as Anzac biscuits, chocolate chip cookies, and coconut macaroons; decadent chocolate enrobed biscuits, including chocolate coated sandwich biscuits; cream filled biscuits, such as custard creams and shortbread creams; and rotary moulded biscuits, including scotch fingers, shortbread, and fun shaped children’s biscuits. Such a varied range of products is made possible by the expert team in Not A Trace’s Innovation Centre, with 30 years of experience in product development and a test kitchen well-equipped to bring innovative ideas to fruition. Boasting extensive knowledge of health food and retail trends, a network built over decades of operation within the free-from space, and technical experience in sensory and testing manufacturing, Not A Trace strives to be an innovative partner that meets its client’s market objectives. With a product line as diverse as it is delicious and a commitment to upholding the most stringent commitment to safety, quality, and delectability, Not A Trace has certainly made waves in the market. For its outstanding contributions to the Australian manufacturing industry, setting new standards across the sector, Not A Trace has been recognised as the Best Free-From Contract Food Manufacturer 2024.
