APAC Insider- Business Awards 2025 | 15 A women-owned business born out of a drive to build a better future one day at a time, Aliet Green produces organic food ingredients made by hand, selling them to a combination of food manufacturers, wholesale buyers, and private-label brand owners, all of which are looking to create impactful food stories to share with their customers. By championing both small, family-run farms as well as female and disabled agroforestry farmers, Aliet Green is improving the wellbeing of its local, indigenous communities. Founder Lastiana Yuliandari was on hand for more. When Lastiana Yuliandari established Aliet Green in 2009, she was studying for her bachelor’s degree at a local university in Indonesia. Guided by her intrigue for the agricultural world that surrounded her on all sides, as well as the challenges that impacted her community, the business was set up in the city of Yogyakarta, which is renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage. From this base, Lastiana pursued agroforestry traditions whilst also seeking innovative solutions to advance local farming methods. Things really began to pick up speed over the next two years, driven by organic coconut sugar beginning to gain traction as a healthier alternative to traditional sweeteners. With Indonesia at that time being the only country to export organic coconut sugar to the world’s market, Aliet Green was able to act as a pure trader, purchasing and procuring the product only when it was produced by organic coconut farmers in the region. As this operation continued to grow, Aliet Green became the first to take organic, fairtrade coconut sugar worldwide, a truly impressive feat given it had started just a few years prior with a 23-yearold student who had recognised the demand for high-quality products. This ethos has continued to fuel Aliet Green in the years since, allowing for milestones such as becoming the foremost supplier of fairtrade chocolate made with organic coconut sugar and having the world’s first BRC-certified coconut sugar processing facility. These developments reflect the culture of continuous improvement that Aliet Green has nurtured over the years, covering everything from its customer service to the rigorous sustainable focus seen through its line of fairtrade ingredients. The impact had as a result extends beyond just financial success, and the demonstrable progress the company has made in pioneering gender inequality – seen through it supporting women in a sector that has long been dominated by men – has led to it being named a social enterprise. “We employ women from disadvantaged backgrounds and with limited education to work on the production line in roles such as packaging.” Lastiana is incredibly passionate about this, especially given that Yogyakarta is at the centre of Javanese culture, a culture where a woman’s decision making is influenced by factors including the intensity of parental contact and whether her family is nuclear or extended. As a result, female business owners in the country must overcome issues such as limited access to finance, support, resources, technology, and freedom, not to mention the likes of bureaucratic procedures, certification compliance, and logistics infrastructure. Nevertheless, as Lastiana told us: “Womenled enterprises are gaining increasing access to impact investment, digital transformation programmes, and international certifications, enabling them to compete globally while advancing inclusive development.” This, combined with the rising international demand for organic, regenerative, and traceable products, makes this pioneer in major international certifications for coconut sugar – and its regenerative organic coconut sugar and vanilla products – equipped for future growth. Sharing these growth plans, Lastiana explained: “Aliet Green is entering an exciting new chapter, scaling both our impact and production capacity while deepening our commitments to sustainability, traceability, and community empowerment.” Whilst the remaining weeks of 2025 are all about strengthening its infrastructure, 2026 will see the company expand to new export markets across the likes of Asia, South America, and the Middle East, as well as escalating its supply base by adding around 500 additional family farms. Ultimately, having built what is a pioneering operation around organic coconut sugar from Indonesia, Aliet Green today stands as a beacon of trust, empowerment, and sustainability in the country’s farming landscape, Despite having achieved so much already, there is still more to come for the company, which remains guided by its core values of integrity, inspiration, and collaboration. As a result of the good it continues to do, it is our pleasure to name Aliet Green the Best Fairtrade Food Ingredients Producer 2025 – Indonesia.
