Jan22686 Feb22538 APAC Insider- Hong Kong Business Awards 2024 | 8 Children who experience learning difficulties, ADHD and autism spectrum disorder face several lifelong risks if they don’t receive the attention and assistance they need early on. They may face alienation and difficulty adjusting to the world around them, disrupting their lives and those of their families. The Children’s Institute of Hong Kong serves to not only support and empower these children and their families, but also to educate and support the local community by eradicating stereotypes, promoting awareness and encouraging inclusion. The Children’s Institute of Hong Kong is a non-profit organisation which has served the Hong Kong community for over 20 years. Its multidisciplinary approach provides services for early learners who experience learning challenges through young adults who are finding it challenging to find gainful employment. The team is familiar with a variety of complex challenges like autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and developmental delays, and it comprises an expansive range of professionals. This includes clinical psychologists, board certified behaviour analyst, speech pathologists, occupational therapistsm special education teachers, speech therapists, and more, all of whom have been sought out to compensate for areas of lacking support, culminating in truly all-encompassing service. These multidisciplinary teams tailor programmes to suit each individual child’s needs, with the earliest learners aged 2 and the oldest, 22. This enables a holistic approach, providing therapies informed by collaboration and diversified expertise. Individualised support is offered to families and students, instilling a nurturing framework for children to thrive and mitigate developmental, social, and educational challenges. The organisation’s support spans a suite of programmes aimed at varying age groups. The Little Learners early intervention programme, for instance, involves stepping in during crucial early years to instil essential skills such as play, social skills, selfmanagement, and learning skills. Programmes go on to include full-day support for children within mainstream school settings and those based in the institute’s comprehensive SEN centre. These sessions adapt to children’s needs, teaching classroom readiness and providing supplemental education in a welltailored, safe, and patient manner. The institute seeks out compassionate members to join the team and those who show a commitment to changing lives. While the institute nurtures young learners, it considers families part of the treatment team, and the approach emphasises equipping parents, guardians, and siblings with the tools to understand their loved one and adapt to suit their needs, creating a support network to last throughout the child’s entire young life. “We believe in working with children to understand their differences, teaching them how to utilise tools to make accommodations for themselves, and self-advocacy. We are successful when they no longer need us.”- Dr. Amber Perymon Evans, Psy.D. The team currently offers support in several schools and looks forward to beginning work in additional schools in Hong Kong, enjoying the recognition its services have garnered. Having also held the inaugural Autism Summit in April 2024, the institute continues to make waves in families, employers, educational and medical communities, and beyond. It illustrated the state of Hong Kong’s infrastructure for the support and inclusion of individuals with learning differences and challenged audiences to question stereotypes. Highlighting the summit’s success, one educator said, “it changed my understanding of individuals with autism.” The organisation is proud to announce another on April 26th 2025, setting its sights on even greater citywide change and awareness. Comprehensive autism education in Hong Kong and support for young learners with special educational needs has never been so effective, holistic, and readily available. Beginning the admissions process is as straightforward as scheduling a meeting and discussing background information, followed by a tour and a trial class allowing each child to explore classes and programmes. Understanding how best to nurture a child with unique needs is no easy feat. Those needs vary drastically between individuals, both in type and how severely they affect a young person’s life. Thanks to The Children’s Institute of Hong Kong, these children are in safe, knowledgeable hands. Its tailor-made services support them to grow into their environments as confident, capable young people equipped to make the best of their education and live rich, full lives thereafter.
