June 2017
APAC / June 2017 133 , AceWaste Pty Ltd was founded in 1987 in response to the need for a professional clinical waste collection and disposal service. As winner of the Best HazardousWaste Transport Specialists – Brisbane award, we interviewed the firm’s Alexander Homewood to learn about the firm’s valuable work in the waste sector today. Waste Not, Want Not Today, Ace Waste supports major health care facilities, doctors, dentists, vets along with the shipping industry, quarantine premises, pharmaceutical companies and many commercial and industrial entities with the disposal of their waste. Beginning this interview, Alex Homewood underlines the firm’s unwavering commitment to outstanding waste service and something of their strategic direction. “We perceived the need for an outstanding service to dispose quarantine waste and other waste streams. In response, we implemented a disposal service for these wastes, including the destruction of confidential documents and electronic data. We pride ourselves on being a market leader in these disposal areas. “In 2009, we opened a state of the art incinerator in Dandenong, to cater for a similar customer base in Victoria. Our mission statement – ‘Solving Tomorrow’s Waste Problems – Today’ - guides our strategic direction and our approach to service development and customer focused service. When you choose our services, you can remain confident that you are working with Australia’s market leader in the management, transport and disposal of hazardous waste.” Environmental focus A characteristic of the partnerships Ace Waste has forged with its clients - is the help the firm provides to combating climate change - one of the most important environmental issues facing us all today. Alex develops this interesting observation in in his words. “The guiding influence on this philosophy is Ace Waste’s Environmental Management System (EMS) which sets strict limits on the environmental impacts of our activities. Ace Waste’s facilities are the only waste disposal facility continuously (real time) monitored 24 hours per day. In addition, our Queensland facility has over 90,000 hours of incident free data, a record we are very proud of indeed. “Continuous monitoring covers temperatures and air flows at the various stages as well as combustion efficiency parameters (i.e. oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide levels) and PH monitoring in the air pollution control system. The data provided to the Environmental Protection Agency is used by that authority to provide graphic records on the performance of the incinerator and for comparison with licence conditions.” Environmental sustainability plans and achievements Ace Waste has also made a commitment to the principles of sustainable development. This means adopting business strategies and activities, that both meet the needs of the firm and its clients while protecting, supporting as well as enhancing the human and natural resources required in the future. Alex then sums up the two key goals of the firm concerning waste, which both focus on sustainability. “Ace Waste has two key goals. Firstly, to ensure that our operations are more sustainable. This means making changes that reduce the impacts of our operations on the environment and community. Secondly, to have an influence on the behaviour of others by building partnerships to help others adopt more sustainable practices.” Carbon credit The two most common disposal methods for the disposal of clinical and related waste are high temperature incineration and autoclaving/landfilling. Ace Waste can demonstrate that high temperature incineration is a more environmentally friendly disposal process than autoclaving/landfilling. In fact - methane is 24 times more potent than CO2 as a GHG - and so 1 tonne of emitted methane will be expressed as 24 tonnes of CO2e emitted. Alex then reveals the firm’s approach to resource recovery and in closing, he reassures us of their high level of experience, professional and personal service for a rapid response to all your waste disposal needs. “Ace Waste creates a ‘one stop shop’ for all waste and hazardous waste disposal including clinical & related, bio- hazardous & infectious, general, dangerous goods & chemical, paper & cardboard recycling and comingle waste. We provide a complete and comprehensive solution to manage your hazardous and non-hazardous bulk and packaged waste. “We have over 20 years’ experience in waste management and ensure the best practical techniques are implemented so they comply with all legislation and we endeavour to reduce, recycle and minimise, using the most environmentally friendly and efficient method of disposal. Our friendly, informative approach to manage your waste will take the questions of legislation away from you as we lead you to a cost-effective disposal plan that will satisfy your waste disposal needs. “Ace Waste boasts the two largest and environmentally friendly High Temperature treatment facilities in Australia processing between 35 and 50 tonnes of material per day.
