Selangor is the main getaway to Malaysia because Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), KLIA 2 and Subang Airport are all actually located in Selangor. In 2017, KLIA itself recorded almost 53 million visitors. On top of that, Port Klang, one of the busiest ports in the world, is also situated in Selangor. With all these advantages, Selangor is highly accessible. The region is also a hub for transportation, development, investment, business, education as well as medicine in Malaysia and is set to become a “smart state” by 2025 with the state government giving priority to developing effective technology infrastructure to improve the quality of life of Selangor’s population. Within today’s tourism market the core focus is on digital marketing, with technology driving consumer choices and influencing their travel decisions. As such, over the last few years, Tourism Selangor has seriously implemented its promotion strategies in branding, advertising and selling of its tourism potentials. Having undertaken research into the tourism market, Tourism Selangor has come to realise that travellers today are more interested in visiting new tourist destinations. Tour operators are now receiving requests for unique experiences from travellers who want to do something that is a once-in-a-lifetime. This is becoming more common amongst millennials who want to explore the world and share their stories with others. Destinations that have Instagrammable moments for place to take photos are also an option and these are easy to become viral in social media. With its natural beauty and majesty, Selangor is the perfect space to market to those seeking somewhere they can share on social media and impress their followers with. In preparation to use this knowledge to their advantage, the team at Tourism Selangor has developed a global marketing initiative to support their promotional activities and increase awareness both locally and internationally. The firm’s upcoming marketing programme will include a new promotion campaign that will replace the previous campaign and has been specially developed just for this purpose called, #TakeMeAnywhere. It is a fresh branding campaign that uses digital marketing and internet and the team is excited to see how tourists react to this latest development. In addition, there are also other initiatives that will complement the campaign, such as new products introductions, CSR based tourism events, international roadshows, as well as international tourism events that will help create more awareness of the tourism products that are currently available in Selangor. This campaign has been designed specifically for the markets that have been ear-marked to increase the number of visitors, which are Europe, China and India, as well as new emerging markets such as Russia, Japan and Taiwan. Through this initiative Tourism Selangor hopes to fully maximise and build a competitive digital presence, while promoting and encouraging investments and tourism businesses.
